Akash Patel, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon and the Ruth Mitzner Professor of Neurosurgery, Residency Program Director, and Director of Brain Tumor Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.

He attended Rice University as part of the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program, earning a BA in Biochemistry, and received his MD from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship and neurosurgery residency at Baylor, where he received an NIH R25 award and conducted research under the mentorship of Dr. Huda Zoghbi.

Dr. Patel specializes in skull base oncology, with a focus on meningiomas and schwannomas. His clinical practice emphasizes individualized treatment planning for patients with brain and skull base tumors.

His NIH K08 award launched a laboratory studying the molecular basis of inherited and sporadic meningiomas. His research has received support from the National Institutes of Health, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, and the Helis Foundation. He has also served as site principal investigator at Baylor College of Medicine for multicenter brain tumor clinical trials.

Dedicated to neurosurgical education, Dr. Patel has chaired the Education Committee of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and currently chairs the Medical Student Committee of the Society of Neurological Surgeons. He serves on the CNS Executive Committee and the SNS Executive Council, and is a member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery.
